Country Overview

Government and legal system: Mali is a constitutional democracy whose constitution provides for a separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government. Executive power is vested in a president, who is elected to a five-year term and limited to two terms. Malian civil law system is based on the French civil law model and influenced by customary law; judicial review of legislative acts in Constitutional Court.
