Bankers, investors, buyers and international cashew businessmen and women talked business at the ACA Annual Conference in Abidjan 2009. At a Business2Business forum during the event, participants were able to present their companies to the numerous prospective business partners in face-to-face meetings. More than 220 people from 25 countries used the conference as a networking and learning opportunity. Thematic workshops treated the key issues for the cashew industry in Africa, such as business planning and credit applications, post-harvest handling of raw cashew nuts and food safety in cashew processing. Field visits to a processing plant and the Abidjan port and cashew warehouses concluded the event. It was time for the ACA to come to Cote d'Ivoire...
Together with the Secretariat, the ACA National Committee Cote d'Ivoire - elected only in May 2009 - put together an event of unprecedented scale. More than 220 people attended, half of which traveled from neighboring countries and overseas to the conference. All in all 25 countries were represented, including the cashew associations of Brazil, India and Vietnam who sat down with ACA during the conference to discuss ways forward for creating a global alliance for cashew.

Of greatest interest for most participants was the Business2Business forum: an opportunity for companies to meet personally with representatives of investors, banks, service providers or other companies involved in cashew business. Some of them were looking for investment opportunities, some to bring their product to the market, others were exploring the potential of the cashew by-products.
Access to Finance, Food Safety and Post-Harvest Handling
The conference program addressed some of the crucial issues the industry is facing in Africa. Finance experts engaged banks in a discussion about the cashew sector and trained cashew entrepreneurs on the key parts of a successful business plan and loan application. A technical session on cashew processing raised awareness of sanitary and food safety standard requirements. Farmer representatives learned about the opportunities of adding value to their crop through appropriate handling.
Field Visits to Processing Plant and Abidjan Port
More than 90 people visited the Olam cashew processing facility in Dimbkokro and the Abidjan Port and warehouse facilities. At Dimbokro, participants saw a state-of-the-art 5,000MT cashew processing facility with more than 900 employees in action. At the Abidjan port, people inspected a vessel, observed container loading and witnessed a container of raw cashew nuts being loaded and sealed.
