Kenya: Ban Cashew Nut Exports, State Told |

The Government has been urged to ban the exportation of raw cashew nuts to revive the industry.
The
chairman of Millennium Management Limited, a local nut processing firm,
Mr Charanjit Singh Hayer, said cashew nut processors only handle about
22,000 tons of the raw nuts produced in the country. He said that it
was estimated that more was exported to India by other players in the
industry.

Cashewnut production in the country went up from 92,573,188 tonnes in
the year 2005/06 to 99,106,720 tonnes in 2006/07, resulting in a boom
in sales from 43,962,278,230/- in 2005/06 to 64,07,495,8105/- in the
2006/07 season.

The Cashew tree (Anacardium Occidentale), is a tropical evergreen
native to the Americas but is now widely cultivated in Asia and Africa.
Cashew in its natural form is a soft, white, meaty kernel contained
within the hard shells of kidney shaped, raw cashew seeds and it is
consumed all over the world as a snack or used as a food ingredient.

Supervisor of the Kam Cashew Nut Enterprise, Koinadugu District, David
B. Kamara, recently disclosed that his organization has nursed seventy
five thousand (75,0000 cashew nuts for the purpose to help farmers
improve production of the nuts. He revealed that the nursed nuts are
meant to target farmers in the Northern part of the country as
benefited from similar project but in cacao and coffee.
