The ACA worked with its partners at USAID’s West Africa Trade Hub to devise strategies and joint activities for the coming year at a work planning meeting in Sogakope, Ghana, June 2-4. The USAID project co-founded the ACA in 2005, hosted the Secretariat until earlier this year and awarded a grant to ACA in 2009. Thanks to the Trade Hub’s support the ACA has facilitated millions of dollars in cashew exports since 2005. More than 70 people from more than 15 countries working for the Trade Hub presented their activities and results over the past year and discussed strategy and activities for the coming year. Representatives from USAID and ECOWAS also provided feedback. “The Trade Hub is an invaluable resource for us”, said Christian Dahm, ACA Managing Director. “Whatever issue or challenge we encounter in the cashew business, the Trade Hub can always help with its vast network of experts and partners. Whether it is a question about transporting cashews across borders, tax and duty regimes or the latest trends in other commodities, for example Shea, the Trade Hub can help.” The Trade Hub committed to continue to support the ACA’s activities at a technical and logistical level. A particular focus will be on accessing finance for cashew processors in the region. William Larbi, the latest reinforcement to the ACA team is excited: “This was a perfect start into the job. What the Trade Hub has achieved is impressive and it is clear that a lot more is yet to come. I look forward to contributing my part for cashews.”

Check out the highlights of the presentations with impressions from all of the Trade Hub’s components and sectors, including shea and West African handicrafts and ranging from policies to mobilize credit for businesses in West Africa to efforts to remove trade barriers. Mozambique Wins Bid to Host Fifth ACA Annual Conference Print E-mail

The ACA Executive Committee has announced its decision to award the holding of the 2010 ACA Annual Conference to Mozambique! The event will take place in September 2010 in the country’s beautiful capital, Maputo. The dates will be announced by 1 February 2010.

The decision came after the Committee examined and rated three excellent proposals according to criteria published on the ACA website in November 2009.

Image On its way to becoming a global cashew powerhouse, Mozambique has seen a sharp increase in the processing of cashews over the past five years.  Today, the country’s industry processes the highest amount of cashew nuts in Africa. The ACA Conference will showcase how strategic alliances between farmers, processors, government and development agencies can realize quick wins for the African cashew sector. Business2business meetings will match potential partners in individual meetings, including investors, buyers, service suppliers and traders of raw and processed cashew. The Conference program will feature visits to world-class processing facilities as well as offers for trips to beautiful beach resorts and safari excursions in one of the many breathtaking National Parks in the region (Mozambique has a number of National Parks and the world-famous Kruger National Park is a 90 minute drive from Maputo).

Mark your calendars, bring your families and see you in Maputo!
